Questions to Ponder

What do you know about segregation? Integration? The civil rights movement?

Have you ever been told you can't do something someone else can? How did that make you feel?

How does change make you feel?

How would you feel if you were one of the people in the pictures?

How do you feel about the pictures in the book?

What might the people in the pictures say to each other today?

What would it have taken for the white boy who is speaking on page 28 NOT to carry a sign protesting blacks attending school?

How were the young black teens able to walk through a hostile crowd to enter school?

What does the young activist on page 61 mean when he says "I'm scared but not afraid"?

Have you ever been in a position where you had to choose betwen what "everyone" was doing, what "everyone" expected, and what you thought was right? What did you choose to do? Why? What were the consequences of your choice?

What is your definition of courage? Who are the most courageous people you can name? (Include historical and contemporary people). What qualities do they all share?

Can something ever be separate but equal? Do you think there are cases of inequalities in our schools today? If so, why?

In one of our recent immigration interviews conducted by a student in our room, the person was asked what they disliked about the United States. His response was racism. Do you agree? Why or why not?
